Short-term telomere dynamics is associated with glucocorticoid levels in wild populations of roe deer

چکیده
While evidence that telomere length is associated with health and mortality in humans birds accumulating, a large body of research currently seeking to identify factors modulate dynamics. We tested the hypothesis high levels glucocorticoids individuals under environmental stress should accelerate shortening two wild populations roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) living different ecological contexts. From consecutive annual sampling sessions, we found faster rates had higher concentrations fecal glucocorticoid metabolites, suggesting functional link between attrition rate. This relationship was consistent for both sexes populations. finding paves way further studies fitness consequences exposure stressors vertebrates.

High Juvenile Mortality Is Associated with Sex-Specific Adult Survival and Lifespan in Wild Roe Deer
Male mammals typically have shorter lifespans than females [1]. Sex differences in survival may result, in part, from sex-specific optima in investment in reproduction, with higher male mortality rates from sexual competition selecting for a "live-fast die-young" strategy in this sex [2]. In the wild, lifespan is also influenced by environmental conditions experienced early in life. Poor condit...
متن کاملIs there adaptation of the exocrine pancreas in wild animal? The case of the Roe Deer
BACKGROUND Physiology of the exocrine pancreas has been well studied in domestic and in laboratory animals as well as in humans. However, it remains quite unknown in wildlife mammals. Roe deer and cattle (including calf) belong to different families but have a common ancestor. This work aimed to evaluate in the Roe deer, the adaptation to diet of the exocrine pancreatic functions and regulation...
متن کاملSeroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in wild boars, red deer and roe deer in Poland
Little is known about the prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in wild life, particularly game animals in Poland. Meat juice collected during the 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 hunting seasons from 552 red deer (Cervus elaphus), 367 wild boars (Sus scrofa) and 92 roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) was tested for T. gondii antibodies using the multi-species ID Screen Toxoplasmosis Indirect kit (IDvet, Montpelli...
متن کاملHunting of roe deer and wild boar in Germany: Is non-lead ammunition suitable for hunting?
BACKGROUND Non-lead hunting ammunition is an alternative to bullets that contain lead. The use of lead ammunition can result in severe contamination of game meat, thus posing a health risk to consumers. With any kind of ammunition for hunting, the terminal effectiveness of bullets is an animal welfare issue. Doubts about the effectiveness of non-lead bullets for a humane kill of game animals in...
متن کاملParturition date for a given female is highly repeatable within five roe deer populations.
Births are highly synchronized among females in many mammal populations in temperate areas. Although laying date for a given female is also repeatable within populations of birds, limited evidence suggests low repeatability of parturition date for individual females in mammals, and between-population variability in repeatability has never, to our knowledge, been assessed. We quantified the repe...
